When I visited with Lindsay, I asked her how she got started in the floral business. She replied, "I cant remember a time when I wasnt arranging flowers." She grew up loving flowers and experimenting with them at home. As she got older, she took floral design classes and made arrangements for friends. In 1983 she finally turned her lifelong love affair with flowers into a business. Shopping from wholesalers and growers, she often delivers arrangements of flowers cut only the day before. Over the years, Lindsay has trained and employed people who also have been able to start their own successful businesses.
I saw Lindsays work set up for a reception at the Opera House. Immediately I noticed the large variety of flowers she put into her arrangements. She says that she always buys extra flowers, giving her clients more than what theyve paid for. There were about 14 to 15 different kinds of flowers in each centerpiece. The arrangements were fresh and lively, mixing lilies, garden roses, tulips, snapdragons, orchids, irises, and many other varieties. Along the balcony and stair railing, she romanticized the location with tulle and twinkle lights.
Lindsays work speaks for itself and brings in new business all the time. "My friends and family are still talking about the beautiful flowers," and "Gorgeous, very fresh flowers," were comments from her customers. She says that she enjoys working with people, and during the initial interview, she asks a lot of questions. The better she knows the bride, the more successful she is at creating her vision. People have told her that they chose her because she seemed like someone who cared. One bride was so happy she wrote, "To say that I was delighted with the flowers you did for our wedding would be a huge understatement - you exceeded my highest expectations. I would say that it was as though you read my mind; however, I hadnt even imagined something so lovely as what you created."
